The heat within
rises from the fires
of youth remembered,
middle ages spent around
the tribal fires of others
whose truths are no more
than ashes, dust lifted,
blown away.
Now I have my own
embers
that I must stoke often,
ignite from my own
wood, chopped and stacked
into a cord for my heart.
